OOM Schengen Visitor insurance
OOM Schengen Visitor insurance is temporary limited health-cost insurance for people staying temporarily in the Netherlands or another country within the policy’s geographical area. It is intended for foreign family members, friends and acquaintances. It may also be relevant for Dutch and Belgian nationals who live temporarily outside their country of origin and visit the Netherlands.
Subject to the policy terms, the insurance provides cover for unforeseen medical expenses, emergency assistance and repatriation. Personal liability cover can be added if it is shown on the policy schedule.
This is limited health-cost insurance. Existing complaints, medical conditions and physical abnormalities are not covered. The policy conditions and policy schedule determine which costs are covered and reimbursed.
Medical expenses cover
Subject to the policy terms, the insurance covers unforeseen medical expenses up to a maximum of €500,000,- per insured person per insured period. The applicable excess is deducted from the covered amount. Reimbursement is subject to the applicable official tariff limits.
Examples of covered care include:
- GP treatment
- Prescribed medicines
- Specialist treatment and investigations
- Hospital admission and ambulance transport
- Laboratory tests and a second medical opinion
- Physiotherapy within the policy terms, up to 25 treatments
- Dental treatment following an accident, up to €350,-
- Certain medical aids following an accident
Emergency assistance and repatriation
Subject to the policy terms, the insurance covers emergency assistance costs, including repatriation or evacuation following a serious illness or major accident. Search and rescue and the transportation of mortal remains may also be covered up to the applicable limits.
- Repatriation or evacuation: up to €30,000,-
- Search and rescue: up to €10,000,-
- Transportation of mortal remains to the country of origin: up to €10,000,-
Personal liability cover
Personal liability cover can be added if it is shown on the policy schedule. Subject to the policy terms, it covers damage to people or property for which the insured person is held liable. Damage caused by the use of motor vehicles is not covered under this section.
Premium, excess and maximum policy term

The premium is calculated per day and depends on the insured person’s age. The minimum premium is €25,-.
Personal liability cover can be added. According to the cover summary, the additional premium is €0.21 per person per day for one person and €0.42 per day for two or more people.
Where does the insurance apply?
OOM Schengen Visitor insurance applies in the countries of the Schengen Area. OOM also lists Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Croatia, Romania and the United Kingdom as part of the geographical area of cover.
The insurance does not apply in the country of origin or in overseas territories such as Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao.
Costs resulting from civil unrest, armed conflict, civil war or insurrection are excluded. The policy conditions contain the complete description of the geographical area and exclusions.
Applying, paying for and taking out the insurance
The insurance can be applied for online for the insured person or for someone else. The application environment may offer payment by iDEAL, Mastercard, Visa, PayPal or manual bank transfer.
OOM Schengen Visitor insurance is intended for temporary stays and, according to OOM, meets the requirements that apply to Schengen visas. If a visa application is refused, the insurance may be cancelled subject to the policy terms. An official refusal letter from the embassy or consulate is required.
Subject to the policy terms, the insurance may also end if the insured person returns to their country of origin earlier than planned, becomes subject to Dutch basic health insurance or dies. The policy conditions determine the end date and any premium refund.
There is a 14-day cooling-off period after receipt of the policy, provided that no claim has been made or use has been made of the insurance.
Important limitations and exclusions
OOM Schengen Visitor insurance does not cover costs related to illnesses, complaints or physical abnormalities that existed on the policy start date. Costs related to diabetes mellitus, gallstones and kidney stones are also excluded.
Pregnancy and childbirth are generally excluded. Separate conditions may apply to unexpected pregnancy complications. The policy conditions determine whether any such costs are covered.
Dental treatment unrelated to an accident is not covered.
Anyone working in the Netherlands should consider whether they are required to take out Dutch basic health insurance. A different OOM insurance product may be more appropriate for study or an internship. For a stay while awaiting a residence permit, insurance for temporary residence may be relevant.
